About the Author

Nicola Denzey Lewis is an award-winning teacher who has taught Gnosticism for fifteen years at Bowdoin College, Dartmouth University, and Harvard University. An internationally recognized expert in Gnosticism, she is the author of two books and numerous articles on various aspects of Nag Hammadi. She is currently Visiting Associate Professor in Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean in the Department of Religious Studies at Brown University.

Excellent Text

I can't imagine a 300 or 400 level course titled "Gnosticism," but here's the text for sure. If you've been holding off on offering this course for lack of study materials, wait no longer. Author Nicola Denzey Lewis does us a great service by pulling together threads from the many directions of scholarship this topic currently generates. As she does, she offers us a take on the position of this school of thought that moves it away from the peripheral curiosity it was when we first heard about it to a much more central position in the history of Christianity. At one place she suggests that we can think of the Gnostics as the "assimilationists" (her word) of those early centuries of Christianity itself, those who would "go along to get along" with the Romans, at least partly. But they may also be compared with their rigidly orthodox brethren, those who would insist that to be identified as Christian, one must be prepared to volunteer for martyrdom in the name of Christ. This is a refreshing injection of rational thinking into the history of Christianity.

What is Gnosticism?

This is a wonderful, thoughtful book full of sound scholarship. It explains that the "Gnostics" were various, some of them clearly "Christian" rather than "heretical," and its analyses of individual works shows what an untidy mix of Hebrew, Greek (mainly Platonic) and even Egyptian influences were afloat trying to reconcile themselves to each other and to the rising new cult called Christianity. Anyone with a serious interest in early Christianity will find this book illuminating.

Valid experience, but FAR from a full picture of Ayahuasca in Iquitos

I've been in Ayahausca apprenticeship for six years, spending the majority of that time living in Iquitos, Peru (the area where Osha spent his four months.) While in some ways, this book needed to be written (mainly to point out the starry eyes that most people enter the Medicine with, myself included; also that there are half-assed shamans who will totally exploit that) but overall, ending up with a s***ty shaman for four months doesn't give someone the right to speak as if he knows the entirety of the picture.

I give him credit for sharing so openly (have mixed feelings about the amount of real names, due to general confidentiality ethics, but whatever), and I'm sure his experience was exactly what he said it was. But he speaks of an apprenticeship where his shaman basically manipulated him to do many things, including pay for everything, help run the ceremonies when he clearly wasn't ready, and participate in gossip that fed the competition amongst that culture of shamans. He speaks of the difference between Christians "letting go to God's will" and shamans "dominating their own will over God's" - this one really got me as I know shamans who are devout Christians and are on their knees in surrendering prayer during ceremony. And not every shaman engages in the darker practices that his guy did. I'm not saying there's no truth to what he's written, but he only has this one, relatively short experience with a "grey" shaman - not enough to speak for the others or the Medicine itself.

He speaks of getting a small glimpse into the emotional healing aspect - something his shaman never once mentioned. Some of that's on the shaman, but most of it's on Osha - the Medicine meets you where your intention lies. If he had approached ceremony in the interest of uncovering his emotional baggage, I'm sure his experiences would have been much different, no matter what the shaman said about it.

It also drove me nuts how he didn't see the parallels of being starry-eyed and jumping from healer to healer, ultimately landing on a Christian one who has him renounce everything and follow their way. Sound familiar? Did he not notice the pattern?

Either way, I recommend AGAINST this one for any newcomers - this is through the lens of inexperience and tunnel vision. I gave him two stars for his willingness to share, but that's about it. Nothing personal, but I feel strongly enough to write my first review ever here...

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Must-Read!

Prior to reading this book, I was not at all familiar with shamanism and had never heard of ayahuasca. My ignorance, however, did not detract from my appreciation of this open and honest narrative.

I would recommend this book not only to anyone interested in shamanism, but also to anyone drawn to stories of the human condition.

The author's first-person telling of his search for meaning and enlightenment pulled me in and made me wish I had been there. At times, I wanted to be the author's older brother and talk sense in to him. At other times, I simply wanted to be his friend--to put my hand on his shoulder and assure him that everything would be okay.

Much (perhaps all) of the text for this book was taken from the author's daily journaling, the candor of which makes the author vulnerable to both our judgements and our empathy. Ultimately, for the courage to share his story with such honesty, the author deserves our respect.

It's a fascinating and fun read that I can best describe as The Alchemist meets Harry Potter meets Indiana Jones. I eagerly await both the sequel and the movie!

Interesting Read

I just finished Osta's book and found it interesting. Having just dreamt of some ceremonies in Peru, I couldn't put it down. I think anyone contemplating going to Peru to Drink with the Curanderos should most definitely read this. Shamans are complex characters and are not above any human flaws. The altered state under ayahuasca can have a wily, trickster coyote feel to it. Seekers should be aware that being under such a heavy, intense, intoxicated and vulnerable state poses a climate where one can be taken advantage of, in both worlds. Practitioners often project and transfer their own ideas and beliefs onto the leaders of these ceremonies. One can also experience profound healing, spiritual revelation, as well as psychological insights. Andrew's book demonstrates this. Javier seems like a powerful and interesting character. With ayahuasca, we really aren't in Kansas anymore.

This book suffers from poor editing and proof reading

This book suffers from poor editing and proof reading. Many circuits were lifted directly from datasheets with no other amplifying comments. The individual circuits don't have a reference source listed--preventing the reader from finding the original circuit and gaining more information. A good number of the circuits shown have no part description -- leaving the reader to ponder the values for C1 or L1, and thus not providing enough information to build from the schematic. This is another poor book from Tab.
Rudolf Graf's "Encyclopedia of Electronic Circuits" certainly has this beat.

Radio Shack had a book like this and I miss out on it

I haven't tested these layouts yet. The book came fast and was low cost. Radio Shack had a book like this and I miss out on it. Now its too late. But I bought some of these. Oh-yes! I was in my little nerdy heaven going through this book. I must have marked ten pages in the first hour of reading. I have a bout 50 electronic books and I love the old ones. I know its not easy being this way if you are. I'm not sure where there is a better place to live where I don't seem so odd.

Excellent - An Animator's Bible.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in going into the animation field, whether in the traditional 2-D or modern 3-D fields! Well worth every dime spent on it. There is so much insight in every page. It was very fascinating, even for someone who is not an artist.

Intimidating - but hard to put own once you stop

This book is required reading for a class I'm taking, and I often have a little trouble getting on board with required reading in classroom situations (even if its about a topic that I'm interested in). I'm always more enthusiastic about starting books that I've discovered on my own, and this one in particular is intimidating because it's 500 pages long with a large format and filled with plenty of text despite the plentiful illustrations.

Well, as I kind of suspected would happen, I have really gotten into it now that I've started. The writers worked at Disney for decades and explain the history and animation techniques of the studio from the inside out with a sensitivity for the art and the individual people making it that I think most students animation can readily relate to. The technical detail it goes into in the early chapters is on par with short books that focus specifically on animation techniques (I recently read "Timing for Animation" - the one with a foreword by Joh Lasseter). All in all it's just exhaustive and so full of detail that you always feel like you have more to learn.

Beautiful, large, instructive, and heavy! :D

A stunning beautifully illustrated book!! The book probably weighs about 15 pounds (ok, probably closer to 11, but who's actually weighing??), but it just makes it that much more of a substantial book! It's also a large-sized hard-bound book.
My daughter needed this book for a class a couple years ago. We borrowed it from the library for the duration of the class (10 weeks), but she's been wanting to own it ever since. She REALLY enjoyed it - read it from cover to cover, and kept returning to certain sections.
It has some wonderful notes from various animators who have worked at Disney. Since that's what my daughter wants to do, she finds it very helpful.
This book is attractive enough to be a coffee table book. We've had friends, who aren't even animators, sit down and peruse the book. It's simply that interesting!

I am grateful for this updated edition of Tom Massaro's Living Justice. I have used the earlier edition for several years now, and my students have found it a clear and accessible presentation. However, as Fr. Massaro notes, Pope Francis has changed Catholic social teaching forever, not only with his writing but especially in his action. This new edition nicely integrates reflections on the Pope’s personal way of ‘living justice,’ as well as exploring his written contributions in Evangelii Gaudium and Laudato Si’. About the Author
Thomas Massaro, SJ, is dean of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, where he is also professor of moral theology. He is a regular contributor to America magazine and often leads parish and community workshops on social justice and Catholic social teaching. He is the author of several books, including U.S. Welfare Policy: A Catholic Response, and coeditor of American Catholic Social Teaching.

Great book!

Frida Kahlo is my favorite artist, so of course I love this book. Other reasons I love it: the pictures, which show Frida's exquisite beauty, the paintings (not any I haven't seen, though I still love seeing them), and the story, which told some things I did not know. Although I really like this book, it was not very in-depth. I already knew most of the information that was in it.

Get the Spanish version

This edition is a pretty good overview of Frida's life with some outstanding colorful reproductions of her works. There is also a very satisfying collection of photographs, both in black and white and color, to cure the voyeur in you to see Frida as she really lived. For example, if you enlarge the back cover shot here you can see the cigarette in her left hand that she was apparently usually without. If you thought it was only the pain of her life that resulted in very few photographs of her smiling think again. The results of her heavy smoking habit produced a poor set of teeth that were blackened and not very flaterring; hence the rare smiling picture. The book has some rare photographs, including one of her laughing and her hideous teeth. The text is easy to follow and gives a whirlwind tour of Frida's life, complete with recollections by friends and other anecdotes. Included is a chronology, list of illustrations and a selected bibliography. My big complaint about this book, and it may you serve you if you are able to read Spanish, is that it is a short version of the original. I have run down a copy of the original Spanish book, "Frida: El Pincel de la Angustia" and it is highly recommended over this translated version. I cannot over state this recommendation . This version is almost like an abridged text by comparison. Case in point, the original has nearly four times as many pages! The abundance of pages is not filler either as it has many more photographs, paintings and more importantly, text. If you hunt around you can find the original at an affordable price. All in all this is a good addition, but not edition, to your library on Mexcian Art or personal Frida Kahlo book collection.
