A compact introduction to Greek papyri in Egypt

Reading this book gave me a sense of how many papyri have been excavated and the study and publication of them. There are many institutions that hold Greek papyri, and the papyri have been published in various collections and periodicals, sometimes with translation and sometimes not. Many of these editions of the papyri are long out of print. A great contribution to scholarship would be collections according to subject of authoritative transcriptions, translations and commentaries of papyri, e.g. legal, commercial, travel, government administration, school notes.

I have started to browse through the Loeb selection of non-literary Greek papyri, Select Papyri: Vol. 1: Non Literary Papyri Private Affairs- Private Documents (Loeb Classical Library, No. 266) (Volume I), and I have also come across The New Papyrological Primer.

Would make a fab movie

This may be called 14 DAYS TO DIE but it only took me 1 and 1/2 days to read it. I was hooked from beginning to end.

I read at the back of this book in the Acknowledgments that this author this author A. B. Whelan has other books written, I hadn't seen them due to her writing a different genre, this I understand is her first Thriller/Crime.
I definitely hope it won't be her last!
In my humble opinion, I have read lots of Thrillers from each type from psychological to mystery, from the daft to the sublime, and this one is written in a fantastic way that keeps the pace up and keeps you alert at all times.

I am going to say: This really needs picking up by some film company I would love to see this played out visually.

This author has really captured and netted my interest from page one.

This had pitch.
This had power.
This had pace.

This had me Guessing

This really did suck me in. There were moments in this book, the way that it is written with excerpts of some being interviewed that I thought YES C'MON gotcha!

Nope

I am not going to give spoilers.

But we have a woman here who appears "happily married" but this all goes down the chute when she finds out her husband is not only having an affair............[not telling]

He wants her dead.

Why not just divorce her? I hear you ask..
Still not telling you!

This had twists, upon twists.......and at the end, twists. It will tie you up in knots.

I defy you to know the climax before the last two chapters.

Awesome read. Highly recommended.

I really do hope this author writes more thrillers, will she top this one? I do hope so. It will be difficult though.

THIS ONE MESSES WITH YOUR MIND!

Meet Sarah Johnson ... wife of Mike, mother to two young children, a housewife,
who knows her life isn't perfect, but considering she's been married 14 years,
it's an okay marriage.

But today is the day she decides to kill her husband. Before you judge her too
harshly, there are things the reader needs to know. Firstly, she receives a
phone call from a stranger, one with an Italian accent. He informs her that he
is a hit man. Her husband has hired him to kill her. He tells her make me a
better offer and I will kill your husband for twice what he's paying me... you
have 14 days to decide.

And so the book begins. She discovers so many secrets, so many lies that her
husband has kept from her. As she researches how to kill him, she takes the
reader along with her on her journey into the past.

Mike hasn't been physically or sexually abusive .. he just hasn't cared...at
least, not about her. He comes across as a type of bully.

Sarah used to be a strong woman, was starting her own business ... before she
got married. But now she's let herself go ...

It's a kind of depressing story in some aspects. It's like peeking in the
windows of your neighbor's house ... you just can't turn your eyes away.
Every few chapters there is an ongoing conversation ... it's actually more like
an interrogation between a detective and individuals who know the couple. So the
reader 'knows' something has happened ... at this point you leave it to the
imagination to think of all the ways this could end.

Did she kill him? Did he kill her? Did the hit man kill one or the other? The
suspense starts to build and doesn't let up until you get to the very last page.
The ending took my breath away.

An intense read!

Wow, what an impressive first thriller. A. B. Whelan wrote a great novel that is impossible to stop reading once you start.

There's a dark humor in the story that, combined with the sense of loneliness and desperation of the protagonist, trying so hard to find a solution and to hide the demons of her past, trying to blame herself for what falls upon her because she feels guilty, and at the same time risking everything to still be there for her children that reminded me of Paula Daily and Liane Moriarty. That is a huge compliment in my book; those are authors in my to-go list. And I have to say that this is the third book on a row with horribly abusive husbands, so once again I'm glad I'm single.

This book made me laugh and jump, to worry and hold my breath; it is this good. With each new chapter that sense of "what now??" enfolded me and I just had to keep reading and see where it would lead. I'm not a huge fan of the ending, hence the 4 star rating, but it doesn't take the brilliance of the novel; it's just that I wished it had been different and that's my problem as the reader, not the author's. And it sure won't be a problem for every reader, so I'd strongly recommend this book.

Oh, and I love how it's written in first person, present tense, which adds to the sense of urgency. You feel like you're living the days with her.

Everything you ever wanted to know about linacs but...

This book is a comprehensive introduction to the principles and technology of linear accelerators (linacs) used in radiation therapy.
Following a brief overview of the components of a typical linac, each subsequent chapter deals in detail with one component or part of the process of generating clinically useful photon and electron beams.
Chapters cover electron acceleration processes, production and transport of electron beams, beam shaping and steering, and generation and control of microwave power sources. Topics such as commissioning, radiation protection and maintenance are also described in full. The use of the linac is also put into context by inclusion of chapters on the treatment simulation process and treatment verification. Specialised and developing technology of interest such as dynamic collimation and electronic portal imaging are also described.
The book is written with the graduate physicist and medical physicist in mind. However, its presentation style is non-mathematical, so associated workers in radiation oncology such as radiotherapists and oncologists should not be daunted by this book. It is well written with helpful figures throughout. It offers good value for money, particularly being available in softcover. The authors are well known and respected physicists in the UK medical physics community.
The book, it should be stressed, is an introductory text and so some topics, such as multi-leaf collimation and electronic portal imaging, receive perhaps a slightly more brief mention than some might wish. The book also suffers a little from a lack of coverage of state-of-the-art techniques, such as dynamic multi-leaf collimation for intensity modulated radiotherapy.
This is one of only a handful of such texts on this topic. Overall, it represents a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the physics and engineering of linear accelerators and is recommended for the bookshelf of anyone involved in the technical aspects of radiation therapy with linacs.

Good book for novices

I would say it is a good introductory book which covers the basic principles of operation of the linacs. I found interesting some comparison and differences of techniques used by various manufacturers (e.g Varian and Elekta). Text is clear, easy to read. However this book is more than 10 years old thus don't expect to find any of the state-of-the-art technologies here.

It goes through all the fundamentals of the inner working and design of a linac. It may not be the latest designs, but you can get a pretty good idea. And this book is a very good starting point if you want to go in to medical physics

Truth, Eternal Truth, Scientific Truth, Jesus as Lord and Savior

This is a great book for the reader who wants to look beyond the here and now to gain meaning and peace. It is easy not to ask all the important questions in life, but the unexamined life is not necessarily a life that many of us would want to live. And this may be precisely why we are so unhappy a lot of the time.

Greg Grandchamp’s book asks the vital questions that we should all ask, “What is the meaning of life?” and “What is Truth?” These questions go to the very heart of who we are as human beings and our purpose here on earth. But we are told many lies by our culture. We are told that truth is relative that there is no real truth. But this precise idea is what makes our life unhappy and unfulfilled.

Many people look for truth and want to find it. But there is a big difference between scientific truth and Eternal truth. Scientific truth can be determined in the world by human beings. And because of this, scientific truths can be changeable and variable. However, the same isn’t the case for Eternal truth. Eternal truth is the only kind of truth that is unchangeable and we can say that it is a capital T truth.

But what is this eternal truth? The answer is in John 8:32 when Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” So, Jesus is the truth. Why is Jesus the truth? Jesus is the truth because Jesus is the son of God. He is the Messiah and the Savior of the world, offering forgiveness of sins and reconciliation. He is the only means through which reconciliation with God is possible. This is the path—the one and only path to truth and wholeness.

So, the choice is ours. We could either live in truth and happiness by making Jesus our Lord and Savior or we can go on living as if God didn’t exist and the truth didn’t matter to us. No one can force us to believe in this truth. But our life will be so much less fulfilling than it could be without knowing and living this truth.

About the Author
Terrance Dicks worked on scripts for The Avengers as well as other series before becoming Assistant, and later full Script Editor of Doctor Who from 1968. Written 45 years ago, this biography is still the best we have on the great inventor. Josephson focuses as much on Edison's work as he does on the man, and the book can be somewhat technical at times. It is natural to compare it to Neil Baldwin's EDISON: INVENTING THE CENTURY, written in 1995, and Josephson's Edison is much more solid than Baldwin's. Baldwin sacrifices the inventions while dealing mainly with the man; Josephson is much more rounded and deals with all aspects of Edison's life. Highly recommended.

In depth and very readable

I had been looking for something to get me past the grade school biographies that I remember reading about Edison -- this is the best biography of the inventor that I have read. Not only does it dispell many of the myths surrounding Edison (he didn't come up with the idea for the incandesent lamp; he was not made deaf by a conductor chastising him for a fire with his chemistry set), but it highlights his major work not in individual inventions, but in combining his inventions into systems ... that were both practical and profitable.
The book is very readable, and goes into just enough depth about his personal life (of which he had very little) and his public and professional lives. The only negative is that because it was written in the early 1950's, it is missing a perspective that could be added by 50 more years of luxuriating in the lifestyle which Edison has made possible.

Still Readable

"It's still burning" was the phrase repeated as the light bulb stayed lit longer and longer. The same phrase was used by Edison's son to keep the death-vigil crowds informed as the great man lay dying, as relayed by this author. Unlike the Edison method of great volumes of empirical data patiently sifted down in huge experiments, the author deftly moves in and out of topics in a refreshingly constrained manner, which he really has to do to keep his book medium-length and still cover a lot.
The middle to the end of the book explores some very important themes, where there are irreconcilable problems with some of Edison's later inventions and the marketability of the resulting products. Like the ore-smashing enterprise in New Jersey, which worked, but not at a market profit. Same thing with the goldenrod-into-rubber operation in Florida.
These then become background for some surprisingly sensitive observations on Edison, made by his friends John Burroughs and Henry Ford. Ford is too sentimental to shut down the funding of the hopeless goldenrod operation; and Burroughs gently points out how Edison in his later years at least, contradicted his personal core-beliefs about sleeping and eating food (He sleeps till 10 am, "bolts half a pie," dumps tons of sugar in his coffee, then lectures on how Americans should eat less and sleep less).
The disconnect which also developed between Edison and his children is developed against the backdrop of Edison's inability to relate to the scale and demands of the electric power industry which he helped create. At his core, as the author shows, Edison's ability to do things was not necessarily transferable to others, including his children. The first batch of kids went kind of bad, and the group from marriage #2 turned out better because wife #2 was more strict and traditional than Edison.
Harvard Business Review recently had an article on great leaders, and pointed out that for every narcissistic leader, you need about 100 obsessive-compulsives scurrying around to make things really work. Each type needs the other to get anything done. This seems to have been the case with Edison, who in addition to being headstrong and creative, had the essential gifts described by Henry Ford as necessary to get anything done: also have "the soul of an Irish construction foreman and a Jewish broker." Or something like that.

Wonderful gift for yourself and all Brautigan fans.

It is truly unique to have an opportunity to look into the eyes and the soul of a cherished American writer. Erik Weber has given us that chance in this book, “Seeing Richard.” These photos go far beyond the posed, back of the jacket portraits and give us a sense of the author’s fuller life. And as an extra bonus, Weber shares anecdotes of his time and close relationship with Brautigan, chronicling much of the time of his success. Even if you have not read any of his novels, this this book is a wonderful introduction and a starting point for a wonderful journey.

This is a really special book if you are a Brautigan fan. Much has been written about Richard Brautigan's life but this book felt more like sharing experiences of life with him, as if I were in the crowd or the park with him, seeing his candid facial expressions and his unposed reactions to surrounding events. You see both the man and the myth as Richard walked that line in his own life. The very detailed tour through his apartment is extra special and has never been seen before, unless you knew him well when he lived there, which the photographer did. A conversational text accompanies the interesting and beautiful photographs, and includes photos of other writers such as Tom McGuane, and Jim Harrison as they were also starting out, like a 70's literary brat pack in Montana. This book chronicles photographically the rise and fall of a career, and the beginning and end of a long friendship. I loved the visual and emotional dimensions this book provides, and if you are curious about or already a fan of Richard Brautigan this should be among your possessions.
