About the Author

PHILLIP I. GOOD, PhD, is Operations Manager at Information Research, a consulting firm specializing in statistical solutions for private and public organizations. He has published more than thirty scholarly works and more than 600 popular articles. Dr. Good is the author of Introduction to Statistics Through Resampling Methods and R/S-PLUS�, Introduction to Statistics Through Resampling Methods and Microsoft Office Excel�, and Analyzing the Large Number of Variables in Biomedical and Satellite Imagery, all published by Wiley.

JAMES W. HARDIN, PhD, is Associate Professor and Biostatistics Division Director of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Hardin has published extensively in his areas of research interest, which include generalized linear models, generalized estimating equations, survival models, and computational statistics. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Institute for Families in Society at the University of South Carolina.

Important and useful

This is a good book. Its purpose is a noble one- it's ultimately about helping us tell truth from fiction. It's about spotting lies made through statistics through leaving things out, distorting findings, torturing data, and generally misbehaving with numbers, This misbehaviour may be innocent but ignorant, or deliberate and deceitful.

This book is a thorough description of how to use statistics well, which measurements and tests to use when, and where. It is mostly understandable, but I did not understand the detailed maths within it. I think this is my loss- it's probably something I should know, and probably something all those who plan and lead experiments should understand. The examples illustrating the main points were well chosen. It is well written with a nice vein of humour running through it. It is written at a high level- I think aimed at university science and maths students and above. It achieves it purpose of teaching us how to get the numbers right, and its second purpose of showing us how to avoid falling into error. The fact that it is so easy to find basic statistical mistakes in published papers should worry us- the errors are sufficient to invalidate these papers and their conclusions. The fact that peer review picks up so few of these errors suggests that statisticians are not part of the reviewing team often enough. It also reduces the credibility of the peer review process showing that it is a process that fails to pick up and prevent errors in published work.

After reading Ben Goldacre's book, Bad Pharma: How drug companies mislead doctors and harm patients the need for this book is all too obvious. Other books on this theme would include the easier How to Lie with Statistics (Penguin Mathematics) and IrrationalityI have a feeling that in my training as a doctor certain topics were left out of the course that should have been taught formally and fully. The design of research should have been covered more- both to do it and to understand its results better, and Patient Safety should have been a formal course too.

This book speaks to a gap in many people's understanding and use of statistics. If I could understand it fully what Hemingway described as "my internal crap detector" would be strengthened significantly. As it was even though I think understood about half of it, I still feel I got a lot out of it.

If you are a science student, or working as a researcher with numerical data then this book will be very useful to you. You will design your experiments better, ask the right questions of your data, and present your results more fairly, and more clearly.

Great advice on what not to do

It's not often I can say a statistics book is enjoyable to read. This volume is quite a joy: well written and full of useful examples so amateur users of statistics (scientists and clinical researchers) cam avoid mistakes that would otherwise ruin your data analysis. References are up to date and very useful as well.

Some gems buried here

There are some excellent suggestions for the applied statistician/data analyst in this book. These nuggets, however, are buried between many topics I didn't find particularly helpful. I tend to pick this book up, read a few pages, skip a few pages, and then put it down until I notice it on my bookshelf again.

Climbing Mount Everest: dangerous. Hitchhiking in Colombia: very dangerous. Leading through change: perilous. Perilous but possible, say Heifetz and Linsky in their encouragingly practical guide to putting yourself on the line and negotiating the hazards of leadership. As the authors acknowledge, many leadership books are "all about inspiration, but downplay the perspiration." This one doesn't. Leadership is always a risky business, but those risks can be understood and reduced. Effective leadership comes from doing more than the technical work of routine management; it involves adaptive work on the part of the leader, and a willingness to confront and disturb people, promote their resourcefulness, and engage their ability to adjust to new realities. But adaptive change always encounters resistance. Heifetz and Linsky examine four forms of resistance--marginalization, diversion, attack, and seduction--before presenting a number of practical resistance-response skills to nurture and employ. Some are fairly obvious (like developing and maintaining perspective, and holding steady in the midst of change), and others more complex (like thinking politically when dealing with friends, foes, and fence sitters), but shimmering nuggets of insight and practical wisdom can be found in each. Recognizing that it can be both lonely and difficult at the top, the authors faculty members of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government set out to lend emotional and practical support. Whether leaders represent a local planning board or a Fortune 500 company, they "live dangerously," say the authors, "because when leadership counts, when you lead people through difficult change, you challenge what people hold dear their daily habits, tools, loyalties, and ways of thinking with nothing more to offer perhaps than a possibility." To that end, Heifetz and Linsky offer useful strategies leaders can employ, such as building political constituencies, trying to orchestrate the inevitable conflict, and forcing those who cause problems to actually solve the problems. Indeed, the book does dwell on the negative aspects of leadership, serving more as a troubleshooting guide than a how-to leadership handbook. A Must Read for Ministers

This is one of the best leadership books I have ever read. It is more than a business book, there is a spiritual component to it. The book talks about the difficulty of leadership, and mostly about staying alive in the process. In leadership, you are dangerous to people. The reason is that you are challenging the norm, which is unnerving for people. You are moving a group of people forward, and people feel a loss. But the key is moving people forward at a rate they can handle. As ministers, this is important lessons. A leader might too quickly move forward, not realizing the emotional attachment to the past. When you do this, there are going to be consequence, you can become attacked, marginalized, diverted, or seduced. There are natural tactics for those who are seeking to stop the progress. The book deals with some uncommon material, but not uncommon areas of concern for leadership. It talks about keeping security around you. This is a group of people who are trusted, and will tell you the truth, it means keeping your wife close, because a leader can be seduced with sex. This book comes to the heart of leadership, and the pleasure and pains of it better than almost all books on the topic. It talks about pre-meetings, not that this has happened in the church. It talks about stalk holders, are those with the most to lose with a change. Often a leader surrounds themselves with those who agree, but in reality, he needs to stay most connected to those who disagree. The people who are the quickest to stand with you, are often the ones with the lest to loose. Therefore those who oppose you, are the ones that will stand most with you in the long run. It talks about handling distress. Ok, this book talks about the heart of leadership, and there are so many topics that are addressed, it is just one of the best, and for preachers, it is a key book. Sometimes I am excited for a book, and there are times when this book should be in the classroom of every graduate school across the nation. It is that good and helpful.

A leadership book without peers; but Parks' book is a great companion

Heifetz and Linsky have a gem here. I'm loathe to use the metaphor of a jewel here, because it connotes you being static while visually observing the gem, and that you would at least infer the value of what you are looking at.

A better, and closer approximation, would be someone who has a pass at a concert, who can go backstage, observe the performers responding to the band leader/conductor/take your pick, pick up an instrument and play along, then move out into the audience, and observe them enjoying the performance (attentive sitting/swaying/dancing...), and participate with the audience as well. That kind of participation, and the value of it, is more of what I'm aiming toward.

That is-in part-what happens when you read Heifetz: you begin a new and risky journey of awareness, knowing there is a destination, but it's not "a destination in mind" per se. That journey of awareness is one that Heifetz encourages the reader to develop and deepen in their leadership. And, as others will confirm, Heifetz outlines other tasks and dynamic postures to cultivate while on this risky journey: you know that the journey is important, but there's not a lot of road maps or preconceived notions of even what to look for that is important.

Now, because there are so many neologisms and loaded phrases, one can get bogged down early: as I did. Thankfully, I read Heifetz in parallel with Sharon Daloz Parks' book, Leadership Can Be Taught: A Bold Approach for a Complex World. As others I know will confirm, reading both books shed light on Heifetz in ways that would elude most people if they only read his text. Plus, Parks' own experience as a professor and mentor is illuminated as she engages with Heifetz. (No, I'm not related to Parks, nor am I receiving anything for this plug.) So, I would highly recommend both books in that task of Heifetz' sub-title, "Staying Alive...".

More than insightful

What is particularly important about this book is that it begs to be read over again as ones career or role progresses. When read for the first time it is with the mindset/ point of view of where one is at that time in their profession. In another company/role/job the scene and players change. And, picking up the book to read, once again, it is as if you barely read it the first time. The authors bungee jump between ideas and real lessons; they dissect the learning and tie it back their understanding about the perils of taking a stand, and leading. They use metaphors that stick and resonate to such an extent one weaves them into their own vocabulary: song beneath the words, getting on the balcony, giving back the work or managing your hungers. The books serves as a building block towards one's own mental model of what leadership means whether you are early in your career or already in the C-suite, because the landscape is always shifting and those mental models serve as an anchor.

A difficult but well reasoned affirmation of God's existence.

I would give it more stars if it had been shorter and written for the layman. I think some of the chapters are needlessly difficult in terms of writing style and content and they can be skipped unless someone is well versed in philosophy. I liked the conclusion and appendixes best because they seem to be the clearest and most persuasive. The author is exceptionally well educated and well read. He has done a wonderful service for anyone who contemplates whether God exists or not. It is just a tough slog for the layman to get to the conclusion and appendixes. His reasoning regarding God's existence is persuasive.

Powerful and persuasive intellectual tour de force on the transcendent ...

The 2nd volume in this quartet is carefully and skillfully put together, gathering evidence for the transcendent from all legitimate quarters, put together by a master teacher. Will take several reads to plumb the depths but appreciating the coherent arguments is available on first read. I just love Fr. Spitzer's work and can't wait for the the next volume.

Difficult Read - Feels like a College Textbook

The author appears to have poured a lot of effort into this book, as it contains a wealth of information and an extensive compilation of philosophical ideas from many philosophers over the centuries. However, it is a difficult read and presents itself much like a college textbook. Also, the breadth of thoughts introduced is a bit overwhelming. I believe the author would have better served his audience by touching on fewer ideas. On the other hand, I'm not sure who his intended audience is.

Some of the key points I learned were about the four pillars of perfection, the nature of God (meaning he is embodiment of those pillars, not simply a being who chooses to "live out" those pillars), and some interesting perspectives and research on identifying the human soul/consciousness. I found myself captivated when Spitzer used examples to illustrate the complex philosophy, but lost and weary when complex ideas were presented while referencing other philosophical ideas as a foundational premise. This is definitely a book that needs to be read multiple times to fully grasp and one where Wikipedia and other Google references can help you fully understand the ideas. If you have a passion for philosophy and want to learn from a master, then this book is for you. If you want ideas presented in a more "user friendly" fashion, then Trent Horn is probably a better choice.

One thing I just had to mention, ... the out of body example about the woman identifying a shoe on a ledge which was inaccessible and on a different floor was somehow spooky for me.

Many errors - disappointing

Minasi's earlier editions were good (and hardcover - what happened to that?). This one was apparently rushed out without any proofreading just to keep up with the Joneses (Mueller). There are so many errors in the first two chapters, it's unbelievable... Maybe the rest of the book actually got re-written and proofed, but the first part is very disappointing and makes me unlikely to grab this volume when I need an accurate answer.

E.G.

p.17 figure 1.5 shows connectors on back of PC, points to a Centronics 36 connector, labeling it a 25-pin parallel port. Same figure labels a DB-25 port (male? female?) as "External SCSI". (Could be, if a VERY old scsi card is in there... )

p.17 "... be the expert on how many millions of polygons a particular sound card can render per second." Huh?? Since when did sound cards start rendering geometric shapes?

p.22 "Quick Steps: Installing a CPU" gives 6 steps. No mention of heatsinks/fans. Just pop it in, button up the case, and get the marshmallows ready!

Revision/updating was done in inconsistent manner.

This book is marred by the fact that the author did a very uneven job of the revision and updating of previous editions. Most of the time the narrative is obviously dated. Other authors also to the 8th edition of their books revised the text to reflect the current states of computers. Too freqnently, Minasi talks as if the average system "today" is a 486. In one place he even has left in the text his remarks of years ago about preparing the book on an IBM-XT computer. I think people learning from this book are going to be confused by the excessive details on MFM hard drives and 286 and earlier computers. I would like to suggest that when the next revision (edition) is prepared, that most of the material dealing with computers prior to 1991 be removed and included on the CD-ROM. One method to do this would be to include the 8th edition on the CD-ROM. There is no sufficient details on new concepts such as why/when one wants use IEEE 1284 printer cables, the differences to be found in motherboards for classic Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium MMX, and Pentium II. The chips sets VX, TX, and FX should be discussed. The various voltage requirements for the newer processors, etc. There is no warning in the book about the fact that there are at least 2 wirings used for the ribbon cables that connect the motherboard serial ports to the 9-pin and 25-pin D-connectors. I get the definite impression that the author had a great deal of hands-on bench work up until perhaps 6 years ago and that in the years since he was been too busy lecturing and revising the various editions. I teach people to recycle older computers for K-12 classroom use. But, even here, most schools will not permit teachers to accept donations that are older than 486. I have taught people how to find $5 used 386 and $20 used 486 boards and insert these in IBM XT-cases. Nowhere does Minasi touch on the vital point that the original IBM-PC cases have different cut-out for keyboard and slots that are at spacing that were changed with the introduction of the IBM-XT. Therefore, IBM-PC cases are only good for the junk-pile, whereas IBM-XT cases can even hold a Pentium motherboard.

No longer the hands-on best text in remote sensing

This has been my standard text for many years, but there are many others of similar quality available at a lower cost. Most of the chapter on terrain analysis is no longer very relevant and new tachnologies such as LiDAR and hyperspectral deserve more treatment.

Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

This will become your favorite figure drawing book

I read the first chapter of this book and took an online class by Michael Hampton. I really wanted to read further into the book, and I'm so glad I got it. This book will fast become a classic in figure drawing right along with Andrew Loomis.
First, the book is broken down into gesture drawing and landmarks of the body. This will help you structure the skeleton and will get you familiar with where the muscle masses will go later. Most importantly, gesture drawing will help you pose the body in a dynamic and natural way. The gesture is the best way to get more interesting drawings and the breakdowns in the book are easy to follow and easy to complete.
The book moves on to the structure of the head and how to detail the features. With these three parts, the body is complete, and you will walk away knowing where to place everything. Then it details the features of the body like the arms, legs, hands, and feet. The instruction ends with understanding how fabric works on the body and how to use light and shade.

The book has colorful and detailed illustrations and examples. The book is broken down in such a way that it will be easy to come back to sections and use those sections as reference.

My only complaint is that it took me so long to add this book to my collection.
