The Class (Dedalus European Classics), by Hermann Ungar

Although The Class was written in 1927, its themes remain timeless: the struggle of a teacher to regain power over his unruly class and the personal trauma involved in keeping a dying marriage alive. Joseph Blau does not have a good life. His pupils are out of control, his enigmatic wife, Selma, is too attractive to other men, and his mother-in-law, Mathilda, is a loud, coarse embarrassment who lives in his house. The Class has dark undertones, as Blau's struggles to overcome his insecurities and to remain ordered and in control, propels him towards catastrophe. Ungar portrays obsession, poverty and deceit with a wonderfully grotesque attention to detail: the character of Uncle Bobek does not just eat, he wipes the fat off his moustache with the fleshy back of his hand, and washes the half-chewed hunks of flesh down with gulps of wine.Joseph Blau's exaggerated sense of guilt ultimately leads to his downfall in this well-translated novel. Review
""A bleak 1928 novel by a forgotten Czech of Brecht's generation, it's an analysis of a frail psyche of a timid paranoid whose obsessive pursuit of order and control lead ironically to his undoing. Unusual and unsettling: what a film it would make."

About the Author
Ungar received a Doctorate in Law and worked as a drama consultant and for the Czechoslovak foreign service.

Mike Mitchell is a well-regarded translator from German with a special interest in Austrian literature. He previously taught German at Stirling University. His translations for Dedalus include five novels by Gustav Meyrink, among others. His translation of Herbert Rosendorfer's Letters Back to Ancient China won the Shlegal-Tieck German Translation Prize. He lives in Scotland.

The Cost of Insecurity
By Lee Armstrong
"The Class" is a good reading experience. It's always a bit of a stretch to read a work written over 75 years ago and in another language. Translator Mike Mitchell does a good job of creating the flow and pacing from the original German as it was originally published in 1927. Ungar was a popular novelist before World War II, often mentioned at the time with Kafka. The main character Josef Blau is a secondary schoolteacher at a boys' school. Apparently not all that comfortable as a teacher, he spends a good portion of his time in mental agony over his ability to maintain control of his students. His insecurity also extends to his beautiful wife Selma whom he suspects as having an affair with a blond schoolteacher Herr Leopold who exercises "naked" (i.e. no shirt) with his students. Blau & his wife have a young son born in the midst of the tale, which only heightens Blau's insecurity. When word arrives that one of his students has bought a note which would make the poor teacher indebted to the rich student, Blau's insecurities mushroom resulting in the unfolding of events including his wife shaving her head to show that she is not trying to attract other men. Ungar gives us the flavor of a time when opportunities were limited and people struggled for the little they had. He also delves into some heady theological discussions on the existence of God, which actually has a unifying effect as the tale concludes. I found "The Class" a somewhat difficult although an ultimately rewarding reading experience. Ungar's novel does stand the test of time and does speak to us seven decades after it was written. Enjoy!

Inside a Deranged Mind
By Hexameron
Have you ever wanted to get inside a self-tormented, paranoid, and obsessive-compulsive mind? Josef Blau is the kind of neurotic specimen approaching a mental break down that makes for morbidly compelling reading.

Set in the 1920s, Hermann Ungar's dark and melancholy novel is a psychological thriller focused on Blau's precarious mental state. He is a schoolteacher at a wealthy high school who suspects his class of boys are conspiring against him. Blau's preemptive strike and classroom philosophy is strict discipline and order. Even the manner in which he sits down at his desk is highly controlled, on account that Blau fears turning his back to the boys at any point will break his authoritarian hold over them. Blau is the epitome of insecurity, which is intensified by his lower class upbringing and intense jealousy of his beautiful pregnant wife.

The cast of characters are small and while they behave realistically, Ungar clouds their motivations in ambiguity. As I was reading, I didn't know if Blau's suspicions were completely unfounded or clairvoyant of the truth. Indeed, this novel favors psychological suspense over intricate plot points. Most of the writing explores Blau's disturbed mind, paranoias, and delusions. I must say Ungar writes with authentic insight into the troubled mind. The reader experiences in detail all of Blau's obsessive thoughts, exaggerated fears, self-afflicted guilt, and far-fetched justifications for his behavior. As a result, every scene contains a level of tension, whether it's Blau's routine at school, his interactions with family and acquaintances, or his agitated and distant relationship with his wife.

Remarkably and to my disappointment, this novel is not a tragedy and does not push the protagonist over the edge as I would have liked. There is one tragic event that puts Blau on a self-destructive path, but Ungar ultimately delivers an optimistic finale.

Bottom line: Unlike Ungar's earlier novel The Maimed (1923), there is very little violence, perversity, or decadent flavor in "The Class" - it's more like expressionism lite. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating read for those interested in psychological torment, guilt, and brooding madness.

Drifting into madness
By An admirer of Saul
Joseph Blau has an infriroity complex and maintains a rigid regime to keep his world in order. He is convinced his class hate him and want to destroy him and lives in fear believing that every word, every thought has a consequence that is linked to fate.
This isn't a comfortable read and you find it hard to sympathise with Blau at times, but Ungar gets into the mind of a madman and the whole story is seen from that viewpoint.
'The Class' is very much of its age;ie between the wars bohemia in thinking style and philosophy. To me this is what makes it a curio of interest. The first World War effectively ended Regal rule-it was part of the class war that had raged in Europe since the French Revolution, and between it and WW2 (the next great realignment of power war) a lot of avante garde work was produced of which this is one. Blau is haunted by his own station in life and that of his superiors.

Overall, a Good Find
By Mom68
I believe that the "Kumon Reading" series of workbooks are fairly new. Kumon is predominately known for their Math program and set of Math workbooks. However, my student used to be enrolled in the actual Kumon program at a local Kumon learning center, and so we are familiar with both programs as a result. I'm really happy that Kumon decided to mass market their methods in workbook form, that anyone may purchase at a store or over the internet. It's far cheaper, and that works for us. I'm sold on their methodology: incremental, sequential, repetitive learning. Students rarely understand a concept the first time, and will never gain confidence in their own abilities unless they are exposed to concepts again and again.

Kumon has attempted through their Reading workbooks to repeat the success of their established Math workbook series. What Kumon has done with the Reading workbooks is to basically abbreviate their Kumon Reading program into a usable workbook. This workbook goes beyond reading comprehension and really attempts to drill down to sequencing the events in a reading passage, learning how to define a word by the context in which it is used, and to critically analyze reading passages for contrasting and descriptive content, among other concepts.

This workbook goes beyond just reading a passage. As we all know, reading should be about critically thinking about a concept or a story. Kumon really works on addressing reading skills in a way that all students can find a good starting point, and building upon knowledge from there.

One important point to remember about these Kumon workbooks: if your child/student has difficulty with one level of workbooks, then simply drop back to another grade of workbooks. The goal of any educational program is not to overwhelm the student, but to build student confidence. If your student is not able to grasp this Grade 3 Reading workbook, then drop back to a Grade 2 Reading workbook. If your student breezes through this Grade 3 book, then move your student on to Grade 4.

We use this workbook as a supplemental tool for my student's reading program. My student has mastered phonics, and is comfortable discussing a reading passage in detail. I really wanted to add another layer to her reading program, and this meets our needs. Overall, a good find.

Best reading-help books ever!
By Savvy Shopper
We had a struggling 3rd grader in the family who was only reading at the 2nd grade level. After requiring him to spend 45 minutes everyday reading (over months), and buying him flash-card exercises, his reading improved, but he still wasn't able to comprehend what he was reading. Then I bought him 3 of these Kumon books. The exercises made all the difference. Lots of variety to not only improve what he was reading, but he was able to paraphrase the contents of the reading afterwards. Success!! He was just reassessed at school, and he has now achieved 3rd grade reading and comprehension skills. When riding in the car the other night with his Mom, he blurted out, "Huh!" His Mom asked, "What's that about?" He said, "We've gone by that restaurant several times (a place that's famous for their homemade breads), and I was never able to read their sign before. It says, "Eat at Fayzes, You'll love our buns." They both laughed, and they were both sooooo proud.

Great study supplement!
By Reader from SF
Purchased this book for my almost 8 yr old, it is probably a little more difficult then the material he's going through in school; that was my intention and we found it a fabulous supplement to his school work. he loves the books and they way they're structured (especially the points system); we love the way the material is organized (they move slowly from less to more difficult reading) and the fact that he's building up his vocabulary and comprehension skills. Highly recommend Kumon books!

A mixed bag
By DMReader
This book is good and bad. The chapters on zombies and Voodoo rituals are really fascinating. In most cases, Mr. Seabrook was the first white person to see many of those things firsthand and his accounts are very detailed. Later in the book, however, the narrative takes a bad turn. The chapters on Haitian culture and race are very narrow-minded and outright racist. I realize this was a different time when people were ignorant, but it is hard to read such blatant racial prejudice. If you're a fan of zombies or the rituals of other religions, the early chapters are worth reading, though.

From Library Journal
Phaidon Press has produced a much-improved edition of Sir Ernst Gombrich's classic narrative study of art history, which was first published in 1950. Among the many competing introductory texts?the central monuments of which are H.W. Janson's History of Art (Prentice, 1986. 4th. ed.) and Helen Gardner's Art Through the Ages (4th ed. o.p.)?Gombrich's venerable work has inhabited a unique niche, having been created specifically for newcomers to art. As his title indicates, he presents the whole of art history as a chronological narrative. Gombrich's voice is lively, opinionated, and almost conversational, yet his erudition shines through to make a book that is both accessible and informative. His premise, that the love of art, not the love of history, is the appropriate basis for its study is communicated directly with his irrepressible enthusiasm for certain masters and his passionate exasperation with 20th century nonobjective artists. While much of the text is unchanged, the format has been completely redesigned with vastly expanded illustrations, improved captions, better charts and an excellent index. This book belongs on every art-lover's bedside table, and even those libraries owning an earlier edition would not regret adding this refinement of an already first-rate work.?Douglas F. Smith, Oakland P.L., Cal.

From Booklist
Gombrich's The Story of Art has been a treasured standard in the field, selling more than 4 million copies since its first edition in 1950. Now in its 16th edition and available for the first time in paperback, this comprehensive look at Western art from prehistoric times on up to the present has been completely redesigned and extensively revised and updated. In addition, the illustrations have all been enhanced, and a total of 443 are now in color. Gombrich is more than an authority, he's an advocate, and his love and deep respect for art infuse his invigorating text. In his discussion of twentieth-century art, for instance, Gombrich explains how even the most experimental contemporary art is connected in some way to what has gone before. Gombrich tells the story of art "as the story of a continuous weaving and changing of traditions in which each work refers to the past and points to the future." Gombrich's invaluable history is a veritable celebration of this "living chain." Donna Seaman

My Bible
By Ida Kotyuk
Originally, Dr. Gombrich intended (in the 1940s) for this book to be read by high school students; or as he writes "young people." Since then, The Story of Art became popular and his book mushroomed into several languages and editions. Because his language is non-fussy and non-scholarly, I have recommended this book to many non-artist friends; none of whom could get beyond the first few pages. So the reader may need some art background. But if you want to know why the Egyptians chose to draw as they did, or why Gothic art and architecture looks as it does (or "what's THAT all about?"), then this is the book for you. I have reread the book three times and may reread it one or two times more before I go to that great studio in the sky.

Exactly what you need :)
By B. Alcat
In my opinion, "The Story of Art" is the best gift for yourself and others. Why?. Because it is one of those few books that allows you to achieve several objectives at the same time... It can introduce the reader to art, or allow him to continue with his studies. It gives him the opportunity of learning, but also entertains and captivates him.
Yes, of course that it is long, and because of that somehow scary the first time you see it. But if you manage to start it, you will find that you will finish it in no time at all. The reason for that is the author, E.H. Gombrich. His prose is fluent, and easy to understand, but what is more important, he doesn't merely enumerate facts: he tries to explain them, setting them in a historical background. And by doing that, compels and engages the reader, making him think about art and its "evolution", and about why the story of art is "A story without end".
The book brings a lot of illustrations regarding the artworks discussed by the author, including several fold-outs that I appreciated enormously. The reproductions allow the reader to "see" what the author tries to explain, and make the book even more dynamic.
Now in its 16th updated edition, this book is already a classic. Maybe the reason for that popularity can be explained by the author. Gombrich's aim was to help others to understand art, from cave painting to postmodern art. He believes that his book is immensely liked by students and art-lovers because "it has made them see how the story of art hangs together".
On the whole, I highly recommend "The story of art" to everybody interested in art. I believe it is exactly what you need :)

art history in the essentials
By drollere
this is a wonderfully conceived and written history of western art from cave painting to the late 20th century. gombrich tells the story by focusing on the essential ideas or achievements characteristic of each artist and art epoch. each chapter is about 5 or 6 pages of text and several large format art reproductions (there are several fold out images of works such as botticelli's "birth of venus" or pollock's "one"). the narrative is conversational, concise, well informed, and extremely intelligent; the book reads as though you are strolling through an immense museum with gombrich at your side, commenting on paintings and sculptures as you go.
gombrich manages to teach the reader how to look at art at the same time he explains the main historical developments and style points of each movement or period. new students of art will find the book is a pleasurable and clear guide; experienced readers will enjoy gombrich's judicious use of detail and selection. a bibliography, chronological charts of art epochs and artists' lives, maps of europe and an index conclude the book.

Suitable for all interior design projects – whether small or large – and for both interior designers working in an integrated design team and those acting as lead consultant, it brings a codified procedure and a professional rigour to the way your practice works and the way your projects run – vital for achieving a professional edge in a competitive field. Its hands-on approach is supplemented by numerous model letters and specimen forms, which the designer can quickly adapt to any job in question. With guidance to the legal background and an introduction to the new concept of space planning, the Interior Designer’s Job Book should become standard reading for both new and established interior design practices, and a textbook for design school/university students on which to base their understanding of professional practice.

Americans at Risk: Why We Are Not Prepared for Megadisasters and What We Can Do, by Irwin Redlener

In Americans at Risk, Dr. Irwin Redlener draws on his broad experience as a pediatrician working with mobile emergency units both for children and adults, his time making recommendations to legislators about the vulnerabilities of children to biological and chemical agents and his regular meetings with Tom Ridge of the office of Homeland Security over a period of four years to write this urging a plan for a coordinated plan between government and the private sector. Redlener feels that Americans have made a mistake after 9/11 of putting all responsibility into the hands of government and official agencies to plan and prevent whatever catastrophe could happen in the future. Hurricane Katrina would seem to point to the fact that America has made little progress in its ability to respond to disasters - the four years since 9/11 have been only an anxious period of heightened awareness about uncertain threats - as in red and orange alerts - and a degradation of what used to be expected medical services - such as supplying the right amount of the flu vaccine. Redlener, in this book, will outline a plan of how the public can be informed and prepared which he feels would go a long way to averting a large-scale disaster. The book is divided into four sections. Redlener begins by looking at the American state of mind pre-9/11 and what went wrong with Rita and Katrina before presenting eight terrifying and vivid disaster scenarios from avian flu to agro terrorism, suicide bombings to earthquakes and a prolonged global blackout. In section three he lays out a plan of how citizens and the government can work together and section four is a guide to citizen preparedness. This is a book that addresses our changed world, both of global warming and terrorism and it presents plans we cannot ignore.

A must read for all concerned citizens
By George G. Dumigan
Dr. Redlener talks about the following five megadisasters and what can be done to improve our response to them: an outbreak of avian flu in New York City; and earthquake in Seattle and the Puget Sound; the detonation of a nuclear bomb in a major city; an accidental chlorine release in a tornado-risk zone; and, finally, the targeting of American children by terrorists. After the interesting discussion of each megadisaster, Dr. Redlener points out the many things we can do to improve our response to them.

He very thoughtfully discusses the four barriers that prevent Americans from being in a state of optimal readiness. The first barrier is the lack of goals and accountability assigned to the monies given by the Feds. The second barrier is the failure to imagine the consequences of situations before they happen. In one example of this barrier, he talks about the fact that all nursing homes in New Orleans were required to have an emergency evacuation plan, and they did. However, all the plans called for evacuating residents to other nursing homes. After Katrina 80% of the nursing homes were damaged and the flooding made them inaccessible. The third barrier is the lack of leadership as demonstrated by DHS Secretaries Brown and Chertoff. The fourth and final barrier is what he calls the strange psychology of preparedness. For example, one in three Americans believes a terrorist attack will happen within a year; however, fewer than half Americans have a family emergency preparedness plan. The thinking follows the line of there will be an attack, but it wont happen me.

We are introduced to Prochaska's "Stages of Change " model to help us better understand how people normally modify their behaviors. By understanding this model we will be better able to create a culture of readiness. We are also introduced to the efforts other countries have undertaken to better prepare and deal with megadisasters. I enjoyed reading about what other countries were and are doing to better prepare for handling megadisasters. I did particularly like the Chinese example that he used. A major earthquake happened in the Qinglong district of China in 1976. It was between a 7.8 and an 8.2 magnitude on the Richter scale. The disaster claimed 240,000 lives and injuring another 165,000 people. The city of Tangshan was virtually destroyed. Qinglong, a community close by, suffered from the same quake, however, the outcome was very different. Two years earlier, Qinglong was warned about the possibilities of an earthquake striking their city. They took the warning seriously and prepared for the day when it might happen. The death toll in Qinglong on July 28th, the day of the quake? ONE --- a man died of a heart attack!! As Dr. Redlener said, "the lesson is overwhelmingly important: mitigation, education, and planning work".

The only megadisaster that could happen now is not getting this book, and the answers it provides, into the hands of our politicians!!!

Good but compromised (3.5*)
By Amazon Customer
Certainly the author is an expert in the field but I thought that the book had three shortcomings. The author, as he admits in the preface, rushed the book out the door, relying on others to do much of the work. Political diatribe displaced accurate facts and sound reasoning in several parts. Finally, the author stumbled at the end, which was perhaps the most important part. Despite these flaws it is an important book which should be read, but with some reservations.

It's a fast read for a variety of reasons. I purchased it just prior to a 2-hour flight and was finished before they collected the coffee cups.

What the author does contribute is a variety of scenarios and the consequences.

Redlener's political orientation is left of Hillary and friends and it shows. My guess is that some of his Columbia associates also sprinkled their venom into the text. Some of the many examples where his bias influences the analysis include flu vaccines and New Orleans.

The author concludes that some profit driven scheme is resulted in the flight of vaccine producers from the US to foreign shores and the concentration of the world's production of flu vaccines into two plants. If there is a scheme it is simply one of survival. Flu vaccine production is a low margin product, rushed to production each year just ahead of the flu season to serve an uncertain demand. If the demand is there (and the author is correct that the public does not take responsibility for basic stuff) they make a little money. However, if there is an allegation of a problem, years after the vaccine was produced, the maker is going to get sued. US courts are the preferred venue where the rules of evidence are lax, joint and several liability is common and the juries are generous. Therefore, only high margin drugs whose primary market is to Americans are manufactured in the US. Attempts at tort reform have of course been blocked by Redlener's friends in government, thanks to the abundant cash contributions of the trial attorneys.

Redlener concludes that New Orleans wrote a disaster plan and then forgot about it. He then goes on to place most of the blame at FEMAs doorstep. What he does not share with the reader is that FEMA paid for and sponsored a full-scale exercise involving local government the year before the hurricane hit and which exercise contemplated exactly the scenario that happened.

The author covers the importance of media cooperation in the efforts to prepare and then a few chapters later dismisses the Bush administration's recommendations that people obtain the materials to shelter in place. He says that the flaw in the process was not with the concept of sheltering in place but rather the fact that it was subject to jokes on late night TV. Guess why? His political friends attacked the concept not because it was ineffective, but because they wanted to attack the administration and the press jumped in on the effort. This was the perfect opportunity for one or more of his political pals to have put the country first and reminded the press of the research done by RAND, which concluded that sheltering in place was both effective and important in a number of scenarios. The author does in other sections refer to some of the other work done by RAND on this area and recommends reading it.

The author's scenario of a terrorist attack using children is excellent. However, it misses the propensity of the most threatening terrorist groups to incresase the scope and sophistication of attacks. Redlener does understand that unlike most conventional wars the purpose of the attacks are not to cause strategic damage but rather to create terror and to show the inability of the government to stop them. It is far easier to create terror than to stop terrorists, but the public sees it as a "fair fight" so if terror continues the terrorists must be stronger.

Redlener complains that people refuse to prepare but makes no mention that his friends need to stop conveying the message that the government can do everything.

His analysis of the consequences of a nuclear attack is abbreviated and while valuable does not include some of the more important risks. The chapter leaves the victims long before the full extent of the effects are discussed. Again this is probably the consequence of a rush to publish prior to the elections.

Redlener spends pages describing a Seattle earthquake using the techniques of a newscast where the impacts are personalized. While this focus provides drama it misses the enormous importance of critical factors like the time of the earthquake. Both the San Francisco and Los Angeles earthquakes of the early 90s occurred outside of normal business hours. While the San Francisco earthquake affected commuters it did not occur while people were working in high-rise buildings, factories, warehouses, schools and retail stores.

Also missing from the book is a serious look at the impotence of government in the face of a widespread disaster. In military terms there are simply not enough boots on the ground. Consider Los Angles where 3.8 million people (plus vast numbers of uncounted illegal aliens) are protected by a thin blue line of less than 10,000 police officers, 90% of whom live outside the city. In the event of a flu pandemic many will be off duty and if the pandemic is national there will not be other community resources to augment the depleted ranks. Citizens are going to need to be responsible for their own protection.

Perhaps the greatest shortfall is the failure to spend a few more days on the last chapter detailing the development of a family disaster plan, preparing and the need to act. Far too much emphasis is given to what government must do and not enough to what people need to do, especially with respect to taking action early. An example of this was the night prior to the Mayors' order to evacuate New Orleans. The bloggers had access to the information that the city employees were fleeing, that it was critical to begin evacuations prior to the Mayor's announcement and that immediate action was required.

To his credit Redlener recognizes that the military is far better prepared to deal with disasters than most government officials. Some of the greatest advantages of the military are that they are mission oriented rather than PR oriented and their culture rewards leadership.

Not a criticism but rather a suggestion for what hopefully will be a revised version is that our entire disaster relief system appears to ignore the fundamental changes which have occured in our capabilities to communicate and react. If there is one element of New Orleans that displays the failure of imagination it is the failure to instantly create an accessable information system/database for affected persons and families. Craigslist, church groups and local papers filled the gap but in a fragmented approach. Here is an example where the government could have asked one group to create and maintain the system overnight.

The author dwells on the problems of refugees without medical records but does not consider the simplicity of a solution - give emergency physicians access to the programs that were paying for the resident's prescriptions and to the major drug store databases. The information is there, instantly accessable but hidden for a lack of imagination.

The failure to use our resources goes far beyond the simple but highly effective database of the missing, lost, family members and folks offering help. The bureaucratic Red Cross wanted to dominate managment of the relief efforts but focused on New Orleans, a tiny fraction of the affected area. In other areas church groups became the focus of relief efforts in many areas. Unlike the Red Cross they operated a peer to peer national organization and were able to identify needed supplies and workers. Operating at no cost to the taxpayer, happy to recieve most any support they were the stars of the recovery.

I was saddened to see the author comment that his daughter probably did not have room in her tiny apartment for the basic emergency kit. Perhaps he would ask himself what would she do if presented with 6 pairs of highly desirable shoes, find a place for them or refuse the gift.

Had Redlener cleansed the manuscript of excess political diatribe, taken the time to more carefully examine the scenarios he developed and finally and most importantly spent a little more time on development and implementation of personal plans and acting on the plans in time of crisis the book would have been a 7 star homerun.

Redlener might pause to measure his attitude and efforts against the Boy Scout philosophy - be prepared, be honorable and do good deeds.

An Urgent Need for Government Preparedness Spelled Out in Foreboding, Realistic Terms
By Ed Uyeshima
The coming Armageddon is quite realistically covered by author Irwin Redlener, the Director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, in a variety of forms in his foreboding tome. In meticulous, sometimes bitingly dramatic detail, he paints five fatalistic scenarios - an avian flu outbreak in New York City; a major earthquake in Seattle; a nuclear attack; a train wreck that causes the release of toxic chemicals; and a terrorist attack that targets elementary schools in Arizona. Within each scenario, we see a chaotic morass of bureaucracy, and Redlener points out real-life examples of such deficient actions that make the aftermath he describes of such disasters feel palpable.

For instance, in mentioning an actual attack on a school in Beslan, Russia, the author brings to light the possibility that terrorists could go after soft targets, specially women and children, since such sacrifices are more typical in Muslim. He also discusses the threat of nuclear detonations. Just as North Korea proved today, terrorists could use newer technology to assemble small nuclear weapons covertly. Moreover, there are liquid explosives and other such low-tech threats that can be used in even more clandestine ways. The variety found in the possible onslaughts is daunting, especially to the reader, and sadly, no one, from Redlener's informed perspective, seems prepared to handle these disasters optimally. Starting with FEMA's lethargic response to Katrina, there is a wellspring of stories about how Homeland Security has mishandled both money and expertise.

In the most prescriptive section of the book, the author describes a nine-point strategy which amounts to validating good common sense and a more disciplined approach to organization by the government. The author is particularly critical of the random nature of American preparations as opposed to the more pivotally positioned and prepared European nations. Redlener begins his recommendations with having the 9/11 Commission reconvene to address preparedness efforts, and including the expansion of the military role in planning for and responding to major disasters. He also discusses the key role played by volunteer organizations in recovering from mega-disasters with little organized support from the government.

Most tangibly, Redlener discusses citizen preparedness and our sometimes surprising history of lapses in this area, even when such efforts were highly publicized during WWII. Despite common belief, little was actually accomplished in this area at the time. The current threat of WMDs is quite different from the A-bombs of yore since they are so focused in devastation, but the need for personal preparedness is still quite evident. While it may come across as prosaic to tell citizens to stay healthy and fit, Redlener knows full well that it comes down to the individual to ensure larger plans can be mobilized. This is a hard read at times but most worthwhile.

Taming your distracted mind - with proven, pragmatic techniques
By D. Graves
I was diagnosed several years ago with adult ADD/ADHD and tried various medications to help focus both my daily life and my life in general. The side effects of Adderall and similar drugs were not worth it. I live a fairly comfortable life, so although I could see the problems my "condition" caused, they weren't debilitating to the point of that they absolutely had to be dealt with. However, my life continues to be a mass of a thousand interests, hundreds of unfinished plans and projects, hyperfocusing on the distraction of the day while ignoring matters of import in my life, etcetera. In many ways, my life is passing me by while I live in a whirl of distractions and impulsive actions.

I managed to acquire an advance copy of this book (I am a book dealer) and was just taken aback by what the title - an acronym - translates to:

FAST: Forgetful. Achieving below potential. Stuck in a rut. Time challenged.
MINDS: Motivationally challenged. Impulsive. Novelty seeking. Distractible. Scattered.

My reaction: "Wow, this is my life. Exactly. Every single letter." I vaguely remembered the symptoms of ADD/ADHD but it had been years since I had learned what they were. To see them in this way - your life described in an acronym - was, however, startling.

The very fact that I read an entire 350-page book in the course of several days is actually the highest praise I can give (99% of books are never even half-finished in my world). The authors are engaging and you immediately know that THEY know what your life is like and the problems you have (as opposed to a dry 'How to fix your ADHD' textbook). While most self-help authors have a novel "key" that they've "discovered" to "cure" your problem, these authors offer multiple pragmatic remedies and techniques for you to try and choose, all based on the latest studies of ADHD patients. This is a thorough, comprehensive guide to help you, not a brief overview of ADHD nor a gimmicky pop psychology book.

Some techniques seem overly simple, but in the limited practice I've had, seem quite effective: trying to simply control your thinking patterns, for example. An ADHD mind is like a wild pony in many ways and this one technique alone seems to help tame that pony. Another technique I liked was organizational habits for the ADHD mind. There are dozens more.

There is a steady inspirational tone throughout the book, with success stories of people whose lives were changed with these techniques. If your life is anything like mine (F.A.S.T. M.I.N.D.S.), I strongly encourage you to read this book. While there is no guarantee that you (or I) will stay focused long enough to allow these techniques to work, it is pretty much a certainty our lives won't change if we don't give it a try.

Great Book, don't buy for Kindle
By San Jose "Geek"
While the content of the book is great but it cannot be fully used if you buy the Kindle Format. There are quite a number of worksheets etc which don't display correctly in Kindle edition. Apart from that the comprehensive worksheets in the appendices are so small that it is not even legible. I am reading the book on Amazon Cloud Reader.

I was expecting the publisher and or the authors to have a web page where they would put the worksheets as they're quite useful, but couldn't find any.

A state of the art, compelling read on ADD!
By beth
This book is a must-read for ADD'ers and the people who love them!

I've read a lot about ADD over the years, and this book takes a new approach which I really enjoyed. The authors--a bunch of scientists who somehow still managed to keep my attention really gripped, imagine that---have translated the typical hallmarks of Attention Deficit Disorder into a less clinical, lifestyle-enhancement manual/workbook type of thing. It's a good approach...even if you don't have ADD there's a lot to learn about how to better manage in our contemporary stimulus-overload world because of this unique angle. Bottom line is that I sped through the book and couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards. They've managed to fuse the latest studies with anecdotal stories into a very readable and interesting format. Everything is couched in hard science, but is translated in a way that the regular reader can understand (a must for those of us who actually have ADD.) Right from the start the book grabs you and draws you right into its world. I learned so much about this condition, but most importantly I learned how many other people struggle with so many of the same things that I deal with every day. I think it would be intensely illuminating for anyone who doesn't have the disorder themselves, but is involved with a loved one who is. It really opens up a world of insight...I can't recommend it highly enough!
