Good saga from a good writer

I heard about Oscar'Zeta' Acosta basically from reading Hunter S. Thompson's book but became quickly fascinated by Dr. Gonzo and wanted to know more about him. I was pleased to find out he had also written some books and was even more pleased to find out he was(is?) a very good writer. Truly an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt their identity as an american is something that they have had to come to grips with. Apart from that serious subtext, it also a very entertaining and amusing story that rolls along, introducing some interesting and memorable characters and situations. A passionate human being wrote this book and it is filled with all the honesty and humanity of someone bearing his soul to achieve a greater sense of genuine self which for Oscar Acosta means being "A Brown Buffalo"

Listen for the Hoofbeats

This book is crude and drug-addled, but there's a lot of truth in it. Acosta opens a window into his tormented soul, and the brutality with which he examines his own life is refreshing. In a strange way, this book imparts a message of hope to the reader. It's a classic. If you dig Hunter Thompson, check it out.

A counter culture Chicano's struggle to find his identity.

Acosta's Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo is a journey through the most desperate six months of his life which happen to be right in the middle of the psychadelic "drop-out" sixties. This is the story of a man whose pain is made real, whose roots are in question, and whose society seems fragmented.
We travel with him from town to town from San Francisco to Mexico in all sorts of environments. In each town he is confronted by another contact zone filled with racism, surrealism and rootlessness.
Acosta is brutally honest with himself. He calls himself the Brown Buffalo. Him and his people, killed not out of necessity but for excess. Their skins became coats and their heads were mounted on walls. They were a people used, abused and driven from their lands.
Acosta ends his book where his life actually begins as Zeta, a leader to the Chicano people, the Brown Buffalos.

About the Author

Edward E. Qian, PhD, CFA, is the chief investment officer and head of research of the Multi Asset Group at PanAgora Asset Management. He was previously a postdoctoral researcher in astrophysics at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, and a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Mathematical Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Qian has made substantial contributions to risk parity investment strategies and quantitative equity portfolio management. He coined the term "risk parity" and pioneered the use of portfolio theory for evaluating alpha factors and constructing multifactor models. He is the coauthor of the highly praised Chapman & Hall/CRC book Quantitative Equity Portfolio Management: Modern Techniques and Applications. Dr. Qian earned a BS in mathematics from Peking University and a PhD in applied mathematics from Florida State University.

Not a "pure" risk parity book but definitely worth a read

Initially I feel puzzled to see a book on risk parity; I didn't know that there is much about risk parity to fill in a whole book.

After finishing the first two chapters, I decide I should finish this book. Its perspective on risk parity is not all the same as others. Some discussions on topics such as high yield bonds, forward rate, stop loss and so on are very interesting. Not that I don't know these but it is interesting to see the author connect them to risk parity.

Only one thing I don't enjoy about this book: the connection of certain topics with risk parity is a bit weak so sometimes I would get lost on where I am in terms of risk parity.

Nicely told story of redemption

Thirteen years ago, Thad's world imploded. He finally told his best friend, Haydin, that he loved him. For that, he got punched in the face and cursed out. Called horrible names. Then, when he got home, he made the mistake of telling his parents what happened. And got thrown out for being gay. He left his Kentucky home for California.

Now an investigative reporter, he is recovering from wounds suffered by a deranged rapist he managed to track down. In constant pain, at least he can walk. And now, his parents have died and he is called home to Kentucky to bury them and see to the estate. Whatever that may be - he thought himself disinherited.

Upon his return home, he finds he is the owner of his father's company, which is now highly successful and worth millions. The guardian of his teen sister. And to his surprise, and dismay, he will have to deal with the CEO of company. Who is none other than Haydin.

When he sees Haydin out in public kissing his lover, his very MALE lover, it is more than he can bear. Almost breaks his heart. But then, meeting with Haydin on business, the sparks reignite and the two share passion. Because Haydin has never gotten over Thad. And is committed to having him as his.

Will the two lovers reunite for good, or will Thad be unable to forgive Haydin for ruining his life thirteen years ago? And will a tragic accident come between the couple?

C.R. Guiliano is a writer I have been following for a little while, and I have been excited to see grow and find her voice. And in this wonderful and rich story, she has come into her own.

This is a nicely understated, heartbreakingly simple study of how one man can rise above the circumstances that shaped his life and somehow, find room in his heart for forgiveness and love. Ms. Guiliano's characters are richly drawn, believable and textured.

With a heavier hand this would be melodramatic and angsty. But she has reined herself in and let the story tell itself. And a wonderful story it is. Love. Betrayal. Redemption. Tragedy.

Well done. I hope to see more from Ms. Guiliano.

light and music didn't work

This is a cute book for the a toddler (my 16 month old son LOVES these books), but this book is not the winner Halloween Bugs is (I highly recommend-- plus, bugs fit in better for that season). But this book is fun and cute nonetheless. Problem is, the one light in the whole book, along with the music, is the last page, and neither work! The light doesn't light up at all, and the music is this pathetic dying noise. I'd exchange it, but don't think I want to mess with shipping it back. I'd say buy this book if you think your little will enjoy it, but don't be too disappointed if the last page doesn't work.

UPDATE: I have since returned this book for a new one, and the new book is working great. Both my 16 month old and 3 yr old love it. The only problem is how my 16 month old isn't gentle with these books, but it is worth the price, even if I have to replace it one day.

This is your warning...

that once you buy one of these books, you'll end up with the entire collection. Children love these pop-up books because they are like no other books out there. The pages are beautiful and sturdy, while being incredibly interactive. We have so much fun reading this book. This series puts all other pop-up books to shame. The rest are the boring "lift-a-flap" for every page. Tons of fun and surprises are in store for the little hands that turn these pages!

Cute and Creative Christmas Book

My 18-month old daughter loves this book. The interactive elements are inventive and thoughtful. I also appreciate the quality of the rhyming text (sometimes the pop ups are cute, but the text is a mere boring afterthought), and there are a variety of different types of activities. Sometimes things pop up, other times there is a lift the flap. There is a bug ornament that you take out of the envelope and hang on the tree (which she loves to do again and again...I get so tired of that page!)
If you are looking for a Christmas book that is interactive and a little bit different, this fits the bill.
My only complaint is that the battery for the star on the last page has worn out, and it's not replacable! They should make it replacable like with so many other battery powered books.

Ok intro to someone new to using a multimeter

Couple small problems, but otherwise good basic introduction to multimeter.
In one place, he says a multimeter measures resistance by sending "a small electricity" from one test probe through the part being tested and back to the meter through the other probe. True, but would be better called a current. The he says "the time it takes for the electricity to travel through the test piece and back to the meter is directly related to the resistance measurement it will display. The more resistance, the longer it takes for the electricity to travel through." Not really. It sends a constant current through the tested item, measures the voltage, and uses Ohm's law to calculate the resistance and then displays it. Nothing to do with time measurement.
In another place he tells how to solder. Heat up and clean the probe. Check. Tin the tip, check. Then he says to apply more solder to the hot tip and let it run to the wire being soldered. Almost right. The right way is to heat the wire and apply the solder to the hot wire, not the tip of the solder tool.
Is this picking nits? Yes. For a novice starter intro to your meter, it does the job. .

Very Helpful

The author aimed to teach the basics of the Multimeter and how to use basic meter settings. That is exactly what I wanted as a novice. I am very satisfied and would recommend this book for beginners. He also wrote a more advanced book which I have not yet read.

Misleading, little on how to use multimeter. Talks about soldering, types of multimeters, but not how to use. Very misleading.
