Bruce Silver is a well-known authority in business process and decision management. He is a master of explaining complex concepts in a simple and intuitive way. His new book “DMN Method and Style" is a nice and timely present to all Decision Management practitioners. This is the very first book that describes the latest version 1.1 of the DMN standard (not even officially released yet). More importantly it provides very specific methodological recommendations for practical DMN applications. The book includes many decision models from different business domains that demonstrate Bruce's view on DMN-based decision modeling. I am confident that both business analysts and software developers who create and maintain various decision making systems with appreciate this new book.

This book is a timely sequel to BPMN Method and Style, and finally tells the other half of the story. I have seen a great many uses of BPMN for approval processes - approving things such as employee travel, loan applications, sales contracts, web site content, etc. Even though the whole point of the approval process is to make a decision, far too often there is no decision modeling at all! All you see is the electronic version of a paper shuffle between the inboxes of various knowledge workers. Often, not a single criteria is documented about how the knowledge workers decide to approve or reject anything!

Enter DMN Method and Style. It makes valuable contributions at both the "big picture" level, and at the detailed decision logic level. For the big picture, DMN describes the overall end-to-end decision in terms of sub-decisions and information requirements. This gets to the "why" of a decision, usually missing from the BPMN view alone. While DMN is useful for describing all kinds of decision making, a substantial portion is targeted toward decision automation. Here, the book is probably the best source of business-focused, worked examples of DMN decision tables and other tabular expressions available today. The examples show that full decision automation is no longer the exclusive domain of programmers and IT staff. Anyone comfortable with spreadsheets and formulas can learn to automate decision models. As IT staff becomes harder to find in the new world of cloud computing, that is good news, indeed.

Essential DMN

Bruce Silver's new book is a comprehensive exposition of the very young standard DMN. Given that the specification itself is incomprehensible even after multiple reads, this is really the only way in for those that don’t have months to spare to start teasing apart its components. Bruce’s direct and opinionated style lays out clearly what the standard has to offer, its strengths, weaknesses and usage. This book hits most of the main entry points to practical use of DMN for decision modeling.

While I don’t necessarily agree with every stake in the ground that Bruce places in part III (method and style), his arguments are well thought out, reference the experts in the field and go a long way toward elucidating thinking on these topics. The book is ambitious in its scope to explain the new standard, draw a methodological picture and push both modelers and vendors toward the future that he envisions for DMN.

Having taken his excellent online BPMN course I would also recommend looking into his new DMN offering.

Amazing Information For Everyone

In the war on health there are going to be many caualities. Are you going to be one? Why is everyone so sick and unhealthy? Read this book and wake up to the lies of big industry and learn about the real way you should treat your body. Our body is a temple, not a trashcan yet most of what we put in there is utter garbage that our body does not know what to do with.

If you are suffering from ANY disease at all no matter how minor or major (especially cancer in which case also check out his other book "Cancer - why we're still dying to know") the information imparted here will give you serious insight into the nature of your disease and show you that treating it is very simple indeed. Using common sense logic (our supressed intuition) along with the studies and findings of many intelligent doctors and scientists, Phillip Day exposes many of the myths that surround the way we view food.

Highly Reccomended Reading for anyone who wants to enlighten themselves and everyone else, who should want to.

Hungry for Health

This is a must read, but not everyone will be ready or willing for the information it contains. It has to come at the right moment in life. That is, when you're open-minded enough... or desperate enough. It came at the right moment for me. If you have an accident call a doctor. If you have a chronic disease... well, maybe not. This book explains the iron hold big pharmacy has on governments and the medical world. Doctors may have our best interests at heart, but big pharmacy is in it for the money and our ill-health is important to them too. It makes them squillions. This book shows a different way. When you're ready, read it. PS. It's not all hard work and sacrifice. Dark chocolate it good for you. Yea!

This startling book is based on a series of conversations between the Cuban leader and a Brazilian priest. The talk is informal and far-ranging, and Betto's questions are often provocative ("Does Cuba export revolution?"). Castro expounds on such matters as his Jesuit education, the effect of the revolution on the Church, the discrimination against Christians in Cuba and the teachings of Christ. Castro is inspired at one point to claim that there are "ten thousand more coincidences between Christianity and communism than between Christianity and capitalism," and concludes that Christians and Marxists can work together. As theologian Cox remarks in the introduction, Castro seems to savor the subject of religion far more than might be expected from a self-described atheist. Cox also suggests the possibility that the book may be "a clever gambit by a wily and resourceful politician who knows that he needs to have Christians on his side." In any case, it is a dazzling performance.

This work contains a series of fascinating interviews between a Dominican priest and Fidel Castro focused essentially on Castro's attitudes towards religion and Christianity. As the introduction suggests, the Spanish version of this book caused a sensation in Latin America because an avowed socialist leader has declared that a revolutionary can be a Christian at a time when the issue has been raised explicitly in Nicaragua. The interviews include many insights about Castro's upbringing and philosophy, but Betto fails to press Castro on his regime's human rights abuses in relation to his declarations on religion. Wendell Berry's latest is excellent and provocative in what I have read so far

The books are very interesting. Castro's recollections are interestingly selective and of course entirely favorable to him.
I have not finished Tex Sample's critique of Niebuhr's concepts of Human nature, power and society, so cannot say much except that I expect the critique to be thorough since I am somewhat familiar with Tex Sample's work.
Wendell Berry's latest is excellent and provocative in what I have read so far. But then, that's the way I have found all of Berry's writings. He is provocatively insightful and thought provoking, providing questions and perspectives which we all need to consider very seriously.

Hear Castro talk..and talk..and talk

The translation of a famous discussion between Fidel Castro and one of the major spokesmen of Liberation Theology. The priest seems to worship Fidel more than G-d and offers very little discussion, simply pandering to Castro, agreeing with his every word, and giving him a platform to talk about a wide range of topics. Reads more like 'Fidel's Philosophy'. Fidel isn't exactly the great orator he is supposed to be, judging from reading his speeches, but he does make some nice points that apply to education and religion worldwide. Somewhat recommended. Better than your average fare from Cuba.

A great read, real autobiography, the priest outwitted

As a Leninist, Fidel Castro doesn't believe religion helps, but he also knows that talking with people about religion is a waste of time. What Fidel does here as the bumbling priest wants to explore the glorious of "liberation theology" is Fidel uses it to talk about everything else. Fidel talks a lot about his own experience going to Catholic Schools in Cuba, about education, even about how good playing high school basketball was for his life. Besides being one of the few places where Fidel talks about his own biography, there is a certain joy to this book as Fidel outwits the priest and talks about life, philosophy, education, sports, colonialism, and much more.
