About the Author
The author's books are always about making the lives of children, and their families, happy, interesting, satisfying, and geared to the stage of development of each child. Her experience in this area is broad and international. In 1963-1964 Susan Mayclin Stephenson spent four months aboard the first university on shipboard traveling around the world and studying the cultures of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. This awakened a life-long interest in cultures of the world, specifically concerning the education of children from birth on. She has degrees in philosophy and education, three AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) diplomas: 0-3 years, 2.5-3 years, and 6-12 years, and over 40 years of teaching experience. In 2001 Susan took a course on Multiple, from Dr. Howard Gardner, at Harvard, University to help her understand the variety of learning styles she had seen catered to in Montessori classes. Susan has traveled in over 60 countries and often shares these experiences in oil paintings. She has taught ages 2-17, worked with parents and teachers, consulted with schools, and served as an examiner on Montessori training courses. If you are looking for a book that will help you to introduce the game of chess to your child in a non-competitive, gradual, and fun way - you have found it!

We opened the beautiful woven bag that held the chess pieces

I suggested playing chess to my grand daughter who just turned 5. We opened the beautiful woven bag that held the chess pieces. One by one she took them out and we named each one by their traditional name used for the game. We placed the pieces on the board where they would be in the game. I asked if she would like to see how the move. She said yes, and as we moved each piece she named it without me saying anything. After a few moves she said i know how to play it my way. Jazz then proceeded to set up the pieces in an orderly fashion, she gave one to me and two to her, then told me how to move when it was my turn. We went through various set ups which were designed by colors and shape of the pieces. I followed Susan's suggestion on how to play with children. It was very helpful in to how to listen for them to explore and love what we were playing.
Her grandfather walked by and said you still playing chess, Jazz 'Yes, and we are both winning". The game went on for a half an hour.
Thank you Susan for the enjoyment of playing.
