What really happens between homeroom and last period in an average American high school? Jeremy Iversen, a 24-year-old Stanford graduate and the author of the novel 21, infiltrated California's Mirador High (fictional name, real school) for a semester to find out. Posing as a high-school transfer student, Iversen discovers what many have discovered before: that high school is "an institution founded on popularity, sports, ass kissing, and corruption." Although Iversen's tone can be entertaining and his descriptions occasionally catch the reader's attention, his story-of an almost out-of-control school in which social cliques (the jocks, nerds, skaters, etc. of any '80s film), alcohol and sex rule and the principal and many teachers are clueless figureheads-is one that has been told too many times. Iversen also has a penchant for grandiose statements about the school system ("The vast and functional cycle, far greater than she or any other entity, would repeat without end until the civilization that sustained it ultimately dissolved as all phenomena must"), and the author's preface about "compromises with characters and chronology" hobbles reportorial integrity. Readers looking for original revelations will be disappointed.

An overachiever in high school (and equally driven in college), Iversen reached his mid-twenties yearning to see what he missed by being a grind. Going back to high school (and writing about it) seemed the thing to do, but convincing a school to cooperate was more difficult than he thought. Finally Mirador Senior High, in sunny Southern California, took the bait, allowing Jeremy "Hughes" to plug in as a senior transfer student. Although Iversen's -surfer-dude front and research on the Millennial generation enabled him to pass fairly smoothly into the A-list circle, nothing prepared him for actually becoming involved in the lives of his classmates. Iversen's extensive use of dialogue gives the episodic, realistically raunchy narrative the patina of fiction, but whether readers approach it as fiction or fact, they'll find themselves wrapped up in the lives of his composite kids. He catches them at their very worst and their best as they rage, dream, and struggle to move on with their lives. Stephanie Zvirin

We Called Him 'Plastic Face'

As a person who was actually at this high school, I happen to know the nickname for this "student" during his time at the high school was 'plastic face' and 'narc' as all students knew he was an adult (mainly due to the tinted sunscreen he wore to make himself look younger). This author created the story he wanted, not the reality that surround him and benefitted from people who wanted to hear about the unreal gossips of a High Confidential.

Entertaining read

I bought this book while on holiday in New York (I'm British) and finished it off in almost one sitting. It was one of those books that I felt sorry to have finished.
In the first part of the book, the main characters are introduced, in the second, the reader is told about the same 2 weeks from the perspective of several of the main characters, while the end ties everything up. Although this is a book about teenagers - it expects a high level of intelligence (and ability to remember details) from its reader - although as a non-American I found the use of explanatory footnotes helpful and interesting.
It wasn't the book I was expecting to read. I initially thought that the most interesting angle would be the writer's impersonation as a student and whether he would be caught or not - and the sorts of cultural misunderstandings that might emergy along the way as he copes with pretending to be younger than he is - the discussion of being a "participant observer". Although this is described in detail at the start of the book, it's then pretty much dropped - in fact the author almost vanishes from the narrative altogether, allowing the individual students' stories to emerge.
By the end of the story I was surprised that I cared whether or not Vic got to graduate - and the end part of the book - the "debriefing" felt odd - the writing is so good and the characters so well-defined that you feel like you have Stockholm Syndrome in that you identify with them and their values. All the stereotypes are there - but they're much more fleshed out than in the usual teen fiction - although the teachers feel much more like stereotypes - if you've watched Daria, then that's what they feel like - but I guess that's because the writer was writing from the students' perspective.
An enjoyable read anyway - even if it is a depressing indictment on the American High School system.

Ambitious but Flawed Project

Welcome to the world of Mirador High School, where police dogs sniff the lockers, a French teacher sexually harasses the homecoming queen, and the biology teacher leads class discussions about the most recent L.A. Lakers game. Jeremy Iversen has gone undercover as "Jeremy Hughes" to help us understand the typical public high school experience, and he spins a fascinating yarn. I had difficulty putting the book down; would anyone get hospitalized after the powder puff game? Would the high school get its accreditation? Would Vic Reyes make it to graduation?
Iversen is at his best when he portrays the angst of the high schoolers he meets. Girls compete for the affection of a guy and become mortal enemies. Vic is a mechanical genius, but he finds his other classes boring and tunes out by smoking pot. Derrick, the student body president, initally plays along with the administration efforts to use him as a puppet, but when he decides he wants to make a real difference, he must first overcome an intense conflict within himself, then with the administration. I found myself cheering for him when he emerges wiser, yet not unscathed.
CAUTION: THIS BOOK IS R-RATED. If I were a parent of an eighth-grader about to go to high school, I would read this book, but not give it to my child. Iversen spares no details in describing the sexually charged conversations and activities of his Mirador High School friends.
SO WHY AM I GIVING THIS BOOK ONLY 3 STARS? Iversen does not really deliver what he claims to deliver. He purports to describe the typical high school experience, but in his book almost everyone gets falling down drunk every weekend, and almost all the parties reach their climax when the cops get called to break up a massive brawl or other wretched behavior. And in Iversen's Mirador, all the teachers are completely self-absorbed, and do very little to educate their students. I have no doubt that the events in the book really did happen more or less as Iversen describes them; the problem is that Iversen is not telling the whole story, not by a long shot. I talk at length with my teens, and their experience is vastly different than Iversen's. Alcohol is not served at the parties they attend; their teachers care, and most of them are effective in helping the class learn the material they are supposed to learn; and with the encouragement of their parents, friends, and teachers, most of the students go on to college or productive work.
So why does Iversen skew his portrait so much? Probably for the same reason that newspapers don't publish headlines like "Traffic is Clear During Daily Commute" or "Government Agency Serves Constituents Effectively." Outrageous events and behavior lend much more drama to a story, so of course an author who wants his book to be read is going to describe the out-of-control parties at length, while omitting the more boring (and typical) stuff like SAT study circles and homework collaboration. If we are to believe Iversen, Mirador students did not stage a musical, or enter a marching band competition, or send a debate team to a regional tournament, or sing Gershwin songs in concert. But even mediocre high schools have hundreds of students who do these things! Why are they not in Iversen's book? Their stories deserve to be told, too. But for this we will have to wait for some other book, because Iversen so strongly desires to enter a world that is not "fast track to Wall Street" that he is going to give most of the focus to the brazen behavior, rather than the everyday successes of everyday kids.
